Lisa Goodman was first elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 1997 and has won re-election 3 additional times with more than 70% of the vote. She is a native of Chicago, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Political Science and Labor Relations. Lisa is Chairperson of the City Council’s Community Development Committee. During her tenure, she led the successful effort to merge the City’s Planning Department and Development Agency to form the Community Planning and Economic Development Department (CPED). This new structure provides a coordinated process and department for community and economic development as well as zoning and planning projects for the City. Lisa also chairs the Minneapolis Claims Committee and serves on the City Council’s Zoning & Planning and Regulatory, Energy & Environment Committees. She was active on the Planning and Implementation Committees for the Twin’s Ballpark and the Orchestra Hall/Peavey Plaza expansion. Lisa is actively involved in urban planning, historic preservation, arts as economic development and affordable housing issues. She currently teaches a class titled Community and Economic Development at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute Graduate Program in Public Policy.
Prior to her election to the City Council, Lisa was the executive director of Minnesota NARAL, the state affiliate of the National Abortion Rights Action League. She has been involved in numerous political campaigns and served as Director of Fundraising for Paul Wellstone’s successful bid for the US Senate in 1990. Lisa currently serves on the board of the Animal Humane Society, the Family Housing Fund and Dog Grounds. She has been active on numerous other boards and commissions at the local and national level. In her spare time on weekends she enjoys gardening, hiking, antiquing and spending time at her farmhouse in rural Minnesota with her Goldendoodle, Sadie.
